Kind of an odd title, but this post is about one of the kindergarten kids at the school I work at. Multiple times throughout the year he has come into our office seeking assistance in finding the bathroom and then wanting you to wait outside until he's done. Here is a play-by-play of today's action:
(Bathroom Boy walks into our office, slowly, looking around at the walls)
BB: Hello again! (He proceeds to slowly walk over to my desk)
Me: Hello Boy, is there something you need? (of course I used his real name)
BB: Well, I was wondering...I need...I don't want to go to the bathroom alone.
Me: Don't you know where the bathroom is?
BB: Six year old's get lost on their way to the bathroom everyday!
(I look at the clock and think of all the work I have to get done)
Me: Ok, Boy I'll walk you over to where the bathroom is, but then you have to go back to class on your own.
BB: Well, Ok.
(In the hallway)
BB: Sometimes I just get turned around.
Me: Which way is the bathroom?
BB: Well, my teachers says it's this way. (Pointing in the right direction)
Me: Great. Let's go see if it's still there. You know kindergartners should be able to go to the bathroom by themselves. (Arriving at the bathroom, it's only 20 feet from my office door) OK, go ahead and use the bathroom and then go back to class.
BB: Well...Miss...Um, I was wondering if you could hold my clip. (A clothespin which is the class bathroom pass which I have on past occasions kept for him while waiting for him to use the bathroom)
Me: You know what, Boy? I can show you right where to put that clip. (I walk into little boy's bathroom -- disclaimer: the big door was open and no one was using it) You can set it right here on the sink. Then when you are done using the bathroom, you can wash your hands really good, pick up your clip and go back to class. Ok?
BB: Well...I guess...(Fidgeting with the bathroom stall door)...so, you're not waiting?
Me: No.
BB: Did you know I just turned six?
Me: That's great! Did you know six year old's can go to the bathroom on their own?
BB: Oh.
Me. Don't forget to wash your hands! Now, shut the stall door and do your business.
BB: OK...*loud sigh*
I'm hoping that maybe next time he'll go on his own. Too funny! I do get a kick out of him, but I think I have become his back up plan. The ace-in-the-hole who will walk him to the bathroom when the classroom para is busy helping other students. When I got back to my office, my coworker who normally doesn't work at our site and had never met Bathroom Boy before asked me, "I wonder what he does at home?" Yeah, that's a good question!
