One person almost had it right! In fact, I think I might give it to her because it was as close as anyone has got thus far. Her guess was, "maybe one of those hollowed out stones for grinding spices or pills." Well, no, not a mortar - but so close, Cassi. It's a pepper mill. Not a rock or a lamp like so many thought. Although I totally see the lamp. Here is maybe a better picture of the pepper mill....
